Rep. Sykes Hosts Community Conversation On Lowering Costs, Supporting Our Seniors
STOW, OH — Last week, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) held a Community Conversation with special guest State Rep. Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson) at the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. During this Community Conversation, Rep. Sykes discussed her work to lower everyday costs and support our seniors.
“The high cost of living is hurting everyone in our communities, from working families to seniors. I promised that I would fight to lower everyday costs and support our seniors when I was elected to Congress, and I’m doing just that by advocating for commonsense policies that will put more money back into your pockets,” said Rep. Sykes. “From introducing my Lower Your Taxes Act to reduce taxes for working people and families to supporting the Social Security 2100 Act to ensure your hard-earned benefits keep up with inflation, I’m committed to doing everything I can to make life more affordable for people in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District.”
Rep. Sykes outlined her Lower Your Taxes Act, legislation she introduced to keep more hard-earned money in constituents’ pockets by reducing the amount of taxes owed when completing an annual tax filing. The Lower Your Taxes Act would make several improvements to the Earned Income Tax Credit and restore the American Rescue Plan’s Child Tax Credit expansion, which would make a significant difference for families paying for medicine, necessary essentials, school supplies, and other childcare expenses. She also spoke about her support for the Social Security 2100 Act, which would improve Social Security benefit cost-of-living adjustments, increase benefits for all Social Security beneficiaries, repeal provisions that penalize public servants, cut taxes for middle-income beneficiaries, and extend the solvency of Social Security for decades to come.
Rep. Sykes and Rep. Weinstein also provided an update on the federal and state budgets, respectively.
“I want to thank my friend and fellow elected official, Congresswoman Sykes, for hosting this event and to all our community members who took time out of their day to attend this important conversation. Their participation is essential in ensuring that we make informed decisions on the needs of our district,” said Rep. Weinstein. “I was pleased to share the latest updates on my legislation and other great wins from the increase of funding to our local schools in the operating budget, to our current capital budget where over 17 million dollars in community projects have been allocated to the cities of the 34th district. I look forward to continuing to serve and deliver for all my constituents this General Assembly.”
Rep. Sykes emphasized her commitment to passing a responsible federal budget that includes the 15 community projects in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District totaling $38,123,166 she submitted for consideration in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 appropriations bill.
